DISCOUNTED memberships are being offered at the new Spen Valley Leisure Centre which is due to open at the end of next month.

An exact date for the £15 million Liversedge fitness centre to open its doors has yet to be made public.

A new website details how members signing up to the new leisure centre now can get their first month for £5.

It also indicates that new timetables are on their way and that existing members will be emailed about the opening date once it is confirmed.

The new centre replaces the former Spenborough Pool, which was closed down in August 2019 after 50 years of service, and demolished later that year.

It has an eight-lane 25m pool as well as a secondary activity pool with a moveable floor.

There is also a large gym, two fitness studios and a cycling studio.

There will also be two changing villages which will include family cubicles, baby change and large team changing areas, as well as various accessible changing areas.

The timetable will offer classes in two large studios across early mornings, mid-morning, lunchtimes and evenings, to cater for all availabilities. This will include classes such as Les Mills Body Pump, Body Balance and Les Mills Tone, as well as Yoga and Pilates classes, This Girl Can sessions, and Moving Mums classes.

Aqua classes will encompass Aqua Med/Natal, Aqua Fit, Aqua Zumba, and Aqua Circuit.

Councillor Shabir Pandor, leader of Kirklees Council, said: “Building work on the new Spen Valley Leisure Centre is now due to be completed at the end of January, and we aim to open to the public at the end of February."

Regarding the budget for the project, which has seen the Council commit £14,250,000 and Kirklees Active Leisure, which will operate the centre, contribute £750,000, he added:

“The budget has been increased to allow for the inevitable impact of Brexit and of building during lockdowns. This increased budget has also allowed us to make significant improvements to the visitor experience including a café.”

The plans for the new leisure centre were first revealed in March 2019, with work by construction company Keir beginning in summer 2020, a year after the scheme was approved by planners.

It has been built on the old Spenborough Leisure Centre site and an existing skate park was demolished as part of the redevelopment of the site, which is next to the Princess Mary Sports Stadium.
