THE proximity of an empty Leeds Road unit to two schools and a park has led to an application to turn it into a take away being refused.

Late last year a planning application to convert 786 Leeds Road, the former base of a marketing business, into a hot food take away was submitted to Bradford Council by Junaid Munir.

The application would also involve the creation of a new shop front, and claimed the business would bring a "different concept" to the street. It said it would not create any parking issues.

However, planning officers at the Council have now refused the plans, saying they would go against a take away planning policy introduced in 2014.

The policy, aimed at reducing childhood obesity, prevents new hot food take aways from opening within 400m of a school, park, play area, or other facility that would be used by children.

The only exceptions to the rule are if the business is in a "local centre" such as a town, city or village centre. Officers say this site does not fall into such a location.

They point out that it is within 400m of St Marys Catholic Primary School, Seymour Park, and Feversham Primary Academy.
