A mental health organisation that predominantly works with South Asian women has introduced an interesting new method of counselling.

Roshni Ghar is based in Keighley and has been helping women from South Asian communities who struggle with their mental health for 30 years.

Over the years, the organisation listened to the feedback from their clients and realized there was an issue. The different cultural backgrounds and experiences of the clients didn’t match up with the working professionals, causing a barrier for both sides.

Roshni Ghar has now introduced ‘Culturally Sensitive' counselling that aims to highlight the trauma and issues women from South Asian communities face.

Shamim Akhtar, Manager at Roshni Ghar said: “We are very passionate about this cause because we feel that the South Asian community, particularly women are often overlooked in many aspects of society.

“South Asians make up a large proportion of Bradford, so we need to make sure that we are helping these women overcome the issues they are facing.

“Mental health is important but there is a stigma surrounding it in these communities.

“There is a lot more that needs to be done but these are the first steps.”

The organisation works right across the district and can be accessed through referrals from GP’s, social workers.
