A DRIVER had a lucky escape earlier today after fire crews had to be called to rescue him from his car after it ended up in a canal.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters were scrambled to the canal in the rural village of Slaithwaite in Kirklees.
When they arrived, crews from the village's White Watch and Huddersfield found the man stuck on the roof of his blue car, which was almost enitrely submerged in Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
Firefighters donned drysuits and used a ladder to bridge the gap between the car and the towpath to rescue the man.
It's unknown how the vehicle ended up in the canal.
Following the rescue, WYFRS said: "If you are out and about and see somebody struggling in water, call 999 and ask for the Fire Service.
"We have the training and equipment to help."
