TWO men from Shipley hosted a comedy night to raise funds for the hospice that cared for a close friend.

Stephen Newsham and Tony Foster held the 'Gerrup Stand Up' comedy night at The New Inn, Shipley, in memory of Jason Sagar, who received care from Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in his final days.

The night raised £1,000 for the Oxenhope hospice, which provides specialist palliative care, advice and support to people living with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their loved ones.

Stephen and Tony, who manages the pub, decided a comedy night would be a fitting way to raise funds in tribute to their friend, and encouraged ten pub locals to 'gerrup' on stage and deliver some comedy gold. Acts included ex-Bradford City goalkeeper Mark Evans, Gary Newsham and Colin Foster.

Stephen said: "The idea for the comedy night came from wanting people to feel the fear of being on stage and the rush of adrenaline it gives you. It wasn't too hard recruiting people to do a set, but making sure they didn't bottle out was the hard bit!

“We are made up with the outcome and are already starting to plan our next comedy night in January."
