GUISELEY enjoyed a festive show when the annual lantern parade was staged on Sunday.

The event, organised by the Friends of Parkinson's Park, drew crowds of participants and on-lookers as oversized lanterns were carried through the town. The Parade captured folk tradition along with Christian, and the specific Guiseley, heritage.

Vice Chair of Directors and Publicity Jennifer Kirkby said:“The lantern held by the children represents the stone at Guiseley Wells which was carved by Geoff Brook for the Wells Millennium restoration. The dragons on it are copied from the Anglo/Scandinavian cross which is in St Oswalds and which dates to around the late 9th century. The lantern behind is the 'button' from over Guiseley Theatre door, which may have held one of the earliest street lights in Guiseley, and is also a symbol of the textile trade. Just peeking out behind that is the Parkinson clock. The lanterns were made for Friends of Parkinson's Park in 2016 by Lucy Phillips, when we wanted some Guiseley features to parade down to the Town Cross.”
