THE jury in the Star Hobson murder trial were given a reminder of the key evidence in the prosecution case and Savannah Brockhill’s defence today by the judge.

The Honourable Dame Justice Christina Lambert QC continued with her summing up of the evidence in the trial, which enters its 35th day tomorrow.

Frankie Smith, 20, of Wesley Place, Keighley, and Savannah Brockhill, 28, of Hawthorn Close, Keighley, are both charged with the murder of 16-month-old Star Hobson at Smith’s flat on September 22, 2020, and also with causing or allowing the death of a child.

Star died from catastrophic abdominal injuries caused by blunt force trauma, and both women deny all charges against them.

Now all the evidence and closing speeches have been heard in the trial, Mrs Justice Lambert has been summarising the “key evidence” in the case.

She reminded the jury that it is up to them to draw their own conclusions from the evidence and which elements they deem reliable.

First, Mrs Justice Lambert wound the clock back to late October, when family members of Smith gave evidence for the prosecution, detailing how Smith was sometimes a “lazy and neglectful”, but mostly good, mother to Star.

Family members said how Smith’s attitude to Star “changed” when she met Brockhill, and how she became “obsessed” with her new partner.

However they also heard from Holly Jones who described Smith’s disinterest in Star before she met Brockhill.

“Here are different perceptions about Smith and Star early on, “ Mrs Justice Lambert said.

She recapped key incidents in the case, the Sun pub punch, the Natasha Maddocks video of Star, incidents at the recycling plant, various CCTV footage from the flat, recycling plant and city centre, and about the five social services referrals.

She also repeated evidence from paramedics and police officers, who said at the scene Brockhill was “calm and not panicking” which they found “unusual”, Smith and Brockhill’s behaviour at hospital and two detectives who both say they heard Brockhill call Star a “brat” shortly after her death, which she denies.

Mrs Justice Lambert also ran through Brockhill’s evidence and her take on various incidents, how the Sun pun punch was “an accident” and her explanation of what went on at the recycling plant on September 13 and all the various Google searches made in the weeks before Star’s death by Brockhill.

The trial continues.
