A YEAR 13 student has been hailed a “hero” after saving her friend’s life after she suffered a medical episode while at school.

An ambulance was called just after 2.30pm yesterday to St Bede’s and St Joseph’s Catholic College, Heaton.

A student collapsed on her way to her final lesson of the day, but her quick-thinking friend jumped into action and instantly began performing CPR.

The girl was rushed to Bradford Royal Infirmary and was placed on the Intensive Care Unit.

Headteacher Lawrence Bentley said: “Had it not been for the friend’s quick thinking and prompt action, the girl who had suffered the medical episode wouldn’t be here.

“We got confirmation from the mum today that her daughter is now conscious but confused as to what happened.

“It was heroic, a Year 13 student working with a Student Welfare Officer, performing CPR, and applying a defibrillator.

“That girl saved her friend’s life and I’m immensely proud of what she did.”

The school called for an ambulance and an air ambulance, a SWAT team and police quickly descended on the school.

Upon arrival, the paramedics took over CPR and brought the girl back around.

Mr Bentley said: “The rumours as you can imagine were spreading with the heavy emergency service presence, but thankfully this story is positive.

“The ‘hero’ was left a little shaken and worried after the incident and is feeling better now that she knows her friend is well.”

The girl is being transferred to Leeds hospital where she will be seen to by a specialist.

“It’s a remarkable story and we’re just glad that everyone is okay,” Mr Bentley added.
