LANDMARKS in Bradford were lit up last night to highlight World Aids Day.

To mark the event, Bradford City Hall and other well known spots including the Forster Square arches, and The Alhambra Theatre were lit red, the colour of the ribbons worn as the symbol of the day.

Bradford Council LGBTQ+ Champion, Cllr Richard Dunbar (Labour, Thornton and Allerton), said: “World Aids day is such a visible way but significant way which just show the importance of raising awareness around HIV. It's been 40 years since the first cases of Aids were reported and they were awful times, but us in the UK ending the transmission in the UK and in Bradford is within our grasp.

There's been a great lot of progress, and HIV people need to know it's no longer a life ending condition and people with HIV can get effective treatment so they can't pass it on."

"Bradford's services are quite good, but it is a postcode lottery across the country."

"Raising awareness by lighting up the city is the first step for positive change."

Cllr Dunbar said he would like to thank charities, Bradford Equity and Yorkshire MESMAC who provide support for people with HIV in the Bradford district.
