A BRADFORD man has been jailed for driving off from a petrol station without paying for fuel.

Stewart Hawkins, 47, of Wareham Corner, was jailed for a total of 16 weeks for two offences of making off without paying.

In the first charge, Hawkins was committed to prison for eight weeks for knowing, that payment on the spot for goods supplied, namely fuel (diesel) was required or expected from him, dishonestly made off without having paid as required or expected and with intent to avoid payment of £98.16, from Asda petrol station, Stanningley bypass, Stanningley, on October 31, 2021.

In the second charge, Hawkins was committed to prison for eight weeks, consecutive to the first charge, and ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge for making off without paying for £70 worth of diesel from Lister Arms service station, Manchester Road, Bradford, on August 29, 2021.

Hawkins was jailed as both offences were so serious because the offence was aggravated by being committed while subject to a community sentence, because the court concluded the defendant has a flagrant disregard for court orders, because the defendant has a flagrant disregard for people and their property.

Hawkins pleaded guilty to both charges at Bradford & Keighley Magistrates' Court on November 16, 2021.
