A BELATED 90th birthday event is taking place on Saturday at Cleckheaton Library.

Between 10.30am and 12.30pm there will be a display of materials about the building, in Whitcliffe Road, and its 1930 opening. There will be1930s music and refreshments. It is one of a number of events organised by the Friends of Cleckheaton Library.

On Saturday December 4 a Pop-Up Café day takes place from 10.30am till 12 noon. Visitors can buy tea, coffee, juice and cakes.

On Saturday December 11, the Friends of Cleckheaton Library invite everyone to their Christmas Concert from 2pm to 4pm.

Friends group chairman Caroline Duff said “Some people are not aware that their library is open. But it is - and once again it’s offering a safe warm place to read, study, borrow books and meet up. We’d like to welcome local people back to join us and celebrate our fantastic library.”

Vice-chairman Erica Amende said “You don’t need to have a library card to take part. Just pop in and see what the library offers. We’ve worked with Kirklees Council to refurbish the events room where the Pop-UP Café happens. It’s now a light, bright and practical room where groups can meet to do art and crafts, sewing, reading and poetry. We’re very pleased that the council has invested money during lockdown to repair and replace parts of the library’s roof and the heating system. There’s now a big room just for computer users, so anyone needing internet access can get it via their library card.”

Pop-Up Cafés will continue every first Saturday of the month, the same day that Cleckheaton Farmers Market comes to town, making it a good day to visit Cleckheaton.

On Saturday December 11, the Friends of Cleckheaton Library invite everyone to their Christmas Concert from 2pm to 4pm. Local community choral and instrumental groups will perform and there’ll be refreshments and a raffle.

Caroline said “If you’ve never seen it before, this event gives you the opportunity to see the main room cleared of bookshelves and turned into a concert space under the glazed roof dome, whose design is said to have been inspired by the dome over the main staircase inside the Titanic. The acoustics are excellent and the concert will be a friendly, welcoming event.”
