A WOMAN is determined to get a safe crossing space on a road outside a Bradford school after her young daughter was knocked down by a car.

Kayleigh Maud, of Queensbury, has started a petition on the matter following an incident involving her 11-year-old girl Amber James outside Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College on Thursday.

Upon leaving school, Amber was attempting to get to Kayleigh’s partner who had come to pick her up.

Unfortunately, when the Year 7 pupil crossed Reevy Road West, she was hit by an oncoming Peugeot 208.

Amber sustained injuries to her head and hips but, thankfully, was able to leave hospital on the night.

Kayleigh thought the worst when she heard the news and was still shocked when speaking to the Telegraph & Argus.

“It has been the most harrowing time,” she said.

“Amber came out and tried to cross between two parked cars and was hit.

“I genuinely thought she was going to die when my partner said she had been hit by a car.

“I was working from home so I was shocked when I got there and saw the road closed and police and ambulance everywhere.

“She was absolutely battered. She had a huge bump on her head. “Her face was cut and she had bruises all over.

“Amber has a heart condition as well which made it even more worrying. She was so shaken up. She may take a while to get over it, I know I will.

“I have never felt the fear I felt when my partner told me I needed to get to school because my child had been knocked over.”

The incident has made Kayleigh demand action so no other parent is left in the same, if not worse, situation in the future.

Having started it on the night, her petition to gain a safe crossing space on the road is well on its way to its 1,000 target, with 774 signatures at time of writing.

Kayleigh continued: “The main issue is there is no sort of crossing aid outside there at all. No zebra crossing or lollipop lady. The primary school Amber went to had both of those.

“Since my eldest daughter, who is 15 (Year 11), started at that school I have just cringed watching kids duck and dive between cars.

“That school holds almost 1,000 people. I don’t know how nothing like this has happened before. I just want to raise awareness of what has happened.

“I just want to do all within my power to get something near that school. I am not going to stop until something is done.

“Police said the woman hadn’t been driving dangerously, it was a genuine accident which I accept.

“But if Amber had had a safe place to cross then it wouldn’t have happened.”

When approached by the T&A, West Yorkshire Police confirmed what had occurred.

A spokesperson added: “Officers were called to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a car in Reevy Road West at around 3.06pm on November 11.

"It is reported that an 11-yearold girl was crossing the road when she was struck by a car, a Peugeot 208.

"She suffered minor injuries to her head and hips and is expected to make a full recovery.”

Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust, which Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College is part of, did not wish to comment.
