MURDER accused Savannah Brockhill’s phone was used to search ways to get rid of bruises and about the impact of sleep deprivation.

The trial of Frankie Smith and Savannah Brockhill continued into its second day yesterday at Bradford Crown Court.

Both are accused of murdering 16-month-old Star Hobson - Smith’s daughter - or causing of allowing her death in September 2020; they both deny all charges.

Yesterday, prosecutor Alistair MacDonald QC began laying out the timeline for the case, which began with Star’s birth on May 21, 2019.

He got up to September 8, 2020, during Thursday’s session, 14 days before Star’s death.

Throughout the day he, assisted by police intelligence analyst Josie Wright in the witness box, talked the jury through events, showing photos and videos of Star, read out records from doctors and social services, read out text conversations between the defendants and played a phone call between the defendants.

Smith, 20, of Wesley Place, Keighley, was present in the dock; Brockhill, 28, of Hawthorn Close, Keighley, was missing due to sickness.

Smith and Brockhill started a relationship in November 2019, Mr MacDonald explained.

The first sign of “marks” on Star Hobson’s face were seen on April 3, with more marks seen in a video on April 18.

More videos and photos were shown after then of marks on Star, and of Star being forced to stand in a corner facing the wall, crawl up stairs and being deprived of sleep.

Some were sent by Brockhill to a friend alongside laughing emojis.

Mr MacDonald also read out a number of internet searches made on Brockhill’s phone from June 27 onwards during the hearing.

They included: ‘how long can you body last without sleep’; ‘what takes bruising away quickly’; ‘does butter help bruising’; ‘does toothpaste take away bruising’; ‘signs of child abuse’; and ‘does Sudocrem take away bruises’, the last of which was followed by photos of Star with a white cream on her face on July 21.

Her phone was also used to search: ‘what happens when you bend fingers back’; ‘what happens when you get punched in the abdomen’; ‘abdominal trauma’; ‘what can snap your ankle’; ‘how to dry drown someone’; and ‘what can someone being nasty then nice do psychologically’.

Social services were called four times due to concerns over Smith and Star, the first on January 27, 2020, with further calls on May 5, June 21, and at the beginning of September.

Social services turned up with police the following day but Smith was not present, and turned up unannounced the day after, when Smith wasn’t present again.

Smith also repeatedly postponed meetings with her social worker in September.

In March, in texts with a friend Brockhill said she “tried to kill me and Frankie” by “driving off a cliff”, and said Frankie got a “hiding” for stopping her.

In a phone call, Smith repeatedly told Brockhill she was going to “murder ya” and “strangle the life out of ya” after Brockhill refused to bring Star back to her, and argued about the cause of bruises on Star.

The trial continues.
