THE Great British Bake Off continued with the first German Week for the eight remaining bakers.

The bakers had to tackle a host of German-inspired challenges including a Yeast-Leavened Cake for their three challenges of making toys from their childhoods.

Here is Sandy Docherty’s verdict of week five’s episode, as she continues her weekly Telegraph & Argus column which will be online each Wednesday morning while the series is on.

Sandy took part in the 2015 series and is the child protection and welfare officer at Titus Salt School in Baildon.

Sandy said: “We’ve never had a German Week before. That was a bit unusual.

“There were three unusual bakes that I felt that I would like to go and try. That’s what I’m getting from this series.

“German biscuits; I loved, loved, loved that.

“There was not a bad set of biscuits from any of them.

“Giuseppe’s were painstakedly perfect in every way.

“Amanda came up trumps with the fabulous jam in the signature task.

“The technical was very, very good.

“It was not complicated, just a bit about getting your timings right.

“In the Showstopper, Jurgen summed it up saying you wouldn’t ask people to tier an apple crumble, you would not do it.

“There was not one bad bake really. I could not fault them.

“I’m surprised it was Freya who left, I thought it would be George.

“Freya was true to her convictions at the end. She has done outstandingly well in the five shows with her vegan bakes. The future is hers for the taking.

“She will do well not having to win it. She is a personable girl.

“She was happy with her Showstopper. It was an absolutely cracking week.

“Next week is Pastry Week and I always think any disaster can be wrapped in pastry.”
