OTLEY 2030 is preparing to carry out its eighth fruit and veg box delivery this October half term and has launched a new fundraiser to help people who are struggling.

The fruit and veg box scheme, delivering produce to families struggling to buy fresh food, started last Christmas and since then the community group has fulfilled its promise to make deliveries every school holiday.

A spokesperson from the group said: “It’s even more urgent that we offer our support now. We’re almost two years into the pandemic and people are really struggling. On top of this, the withdrawal of the £20 boost in Universal Credit and the rise in price of gas, electricity, petrol and groceries will force some individuals and low-income families to choose whether to ‘eat or heat’ this winter. It’s a horrible situation to be in – especially if you have small children.”

“We want to offer both fresh food and some winter warmers in solidarity with anyone in the town who is struggling right now. So, we’re not only fundraising to buy fruit and vegetables, we’re also asking for donations of woollies, blankets, and especially draught excluders, which can really help in badly insulated houses.”

“The people of Otley have been so generous over the past year and have allowed us to complete seven deliveries already – making a huge difference to vulnerable adults, older people, and families. We want to continue offering this small act of solidarity and our fantastic volunteers and brilliant local businesses are ready to support us. We’ll be out delivering around the town on Tuesday 26th October.”

Otley 2030 is asking for donations of warm hats, gloves, scarves, clothes and blankets as well as draught excluders. The clothes can be suitable for babies, children or adults and items can be knitted, handmade, or donated second-hand. All items must be clean and in good condition. Email shannon.coles23@yahoo.co.uk to arrange delivery. Alternatively items can be taken to Bridge Street Church between 9am and 10am on delivery day.
