A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a house fire in Bradford which injured two people.

Two people were rescued from a blaze at a terraced house on Fairbank Road, Girlington, at just after 6.20am today.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed a man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Two people were injured as a result of the blaze, but neither is thought to have suffered life threatening injuries.

Neighbours on Fairbank Road spoke of people using a ladder to rescue those inside the affected house.

A window pane on the first floor property was smashed in the rescue operation, which was boarded up later on today.

Nearby residents also spoke of the smell of smoke at the time of the blaze, numerous emergency service vehicles at the scene.

A Fairbank Road resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "A few of my brothers went out to see what was happening.

"My neighbours had ladders out, helping to rescue the kids."

A Fairbank Road resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "Everybody was outside.

"There were lots of fire engines. I could hear a lady say 'my children are inside'. You could hear them.

"It was all of a sudden."

Another Fairbank Road resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I heard a lot of sirens.

"There were quite a lot of police cars and ambulances.

"The whole road was blocked. You could smell the smoke."

A police cordon remained in place this afternoon on a section of Fairbank Road. A larger part of the street was initially taped off after the emergency services, including ambulances, fire crews from the district and police cars, attended the scene.

Uniformed police officers were at the scene guarding the cordon, with parked police cars also parked on the road.

Two Crime Scene Investigation vans were also at the scene with an officer taking photographs of the fire-ravaged property.

A blue West Yorkshire Police - Bradford District van was also spotted at the scene later today.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed the details of the incident and that its investigations continue.

A force spokesman said: "Police are investigating a fire at a house on Fairbank Road, Bradford.

"Officers were called at 6.22am today. Two people were injured as a result of the incident – neither is thought to have suffered life threatening injuries

"Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life."
