THE names of two young Bradford men killed in the Korean conflict have been added to the city's war memorial, and they will be commemorated at a ceremony this month.

Fusiliers Lawrence Walker and James Cannon lost their lives within a few months of each other, in 1951. Both on National Service, they were sent to the Korean War.

Malcolm Atkinson came across their names in a Telegraph & Argus article in 2015, appealing for information about local men who served in the Korean War.

Now, thanks to his efforts in researching the men, their names have been engraved on Bradford's war memorial - which is close to the Cenotaph in the city centre and bears the names of people killed in action after 1949.

The Korean War lasted from 1950 until a ceasefire in 1953. Mr Atkinson, who says it is the 'forgotten war', is keen to trace the families of other men killed in the conflict, so their names can be added too.

“These men deserve to be commemorated, along with all the others who died in action,” he said. "This was a forgotten war, and many of the men who served in it were on National Service. They were very young, some still in their teens.

“Fus Cannon was killed on January 3, 1951 and Fus Walker on April 25, 1951. They were in the Northumberland Fusiliers."

Working with the Korean Veterans Association, Mr Atkinson has traced the family of Fus Cannon and he would like to hear from the family of Fus Walker, to invite members to a service and wreath-laying ceremony on Sunday, October 24, at 2pm.

It will be followed by a ceremony in City Hall, hosted by Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Shabir Hussain, and guests will include representatives of the Korean Veterans Association and the Duke of Wellington regiment.

Also due to attend are relatives of Corporal David F Kenehan, who served in Korea in the Duke of Wellington Regiment and was awarded the Elizabeth Cross.

"He died in 1953, aged 19. "He died in the same area of Korea as Fusiliers Cannon and Walker," said Mr Atkinson, who had Cpl Kenehan's name engraved on Bradford's war memorial earlier this year.

Mr Atkinson contacted Joanne Dodds, Bradford Council’s Armed Forces Champion, and they discovered that David Kenehan was born in Thornbury and went to St Mary’s School.
