RESIDENTS in Saltaire have complained about a series of explosions after reports of fireworks being let off in the early hours of this morning.

Village residents took to social media to say fireworks were let off at around 3am today.

They complained of being woken up by the noise.

Waseem Ahmed, of Fernhill Road, said: “I was woken up by it at about 3am.

“I was livid and I was really struggling to get back to sleep.

“It’s absolutely appalling. You could see the lights. There were bright white lights.

“The fireworks stopped and started up again. There were three spells of fireworks that lasted for a total of 10 minutes.”

Chris Hester, of Saltaire, said: "It woke me up at 3.30am. Lucky I had earplugs in, even so, it woke me up."

A Saltaire resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I was feeding my baby when I heard an explosion, followed by others several minutes apart and then continuous fireworks going off.

“It sounded like it was happening down the road from where I live in Saltaire.

“Something really needs to be done about this sort of nuisance.”

Another Saltaire resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “We were woken up too. So inconsiderate.

“We eventually got up at 4.30am because we couldn’t get back to sleep. And now have a full days’ work ahead of us.

“I thought it was some kind of explosion, or someone being shot.

“What are people up to at that time of the morning?

“Morons, should throw the book at them and ban fireworks altogether unless an organised display.”

Shipley MP Philip Davies branded the 3am fireworks reports as the ‘perfect example of anti-social behaviour’.

He said: “It’s just completely and utterly unacceptable.

“It is a complete disregard for everybody else.

The time that these fireworks were let off is completely and utterly unjustifiable

“I have not had any complaints about it, but I have had more and more complaints about fireworks being set off at all hours of the day and night.

“This is becoming a bigger issue in the Bradford district.”

Councillor Kevin Warnes (Green, Shipley) hit out at those responsible for letting off the early morning fireworks, saying it is becoming an all-year round problem.

He said: “It’s horrendous and completely unnecessary and irresponsible.

“I am fully supportive of the police. We need residents to give the police all the support and information we can about such incidents.

“More awareness needs to raised about this issue.

“We need to all work together on this.”

Cllr Martin Love (Green, Shipley) said:  “We have had a lot of problems with fireworks in the Shipley area over the last few weeks.

“It is an ongoing problem. But we have not had any reports of fireworks at 3am before.

“It’s a bit sad that people need to do this sort of thing.

“I think we need to restrict the sale of fireworks to people doing organised displays.

“We need some national legislation to clampdown on this.”

A resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I have Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and this, as it was so unexpected and the middle of the night, has impacted on my sleep.

“Loud bangs, flashes and noises in the middle of the night do not help anyone, but people extra sensitive to this are even more affected.”

People also took to the Telegraph & Argus Facebook page to express their anger at the fireworks being let off at 3am.

Mick Ryan posted: “I heard them and I live in Eccleshill.”

Lucy Mills wrote: “I thought it was an explosion at first as the first few were just single bangs.”

Other residents said late night fireworks being let off is a problem across the Bradford district, including in Heaton.

A Bradford Council spokesman confirmed it had not received any complaints about this fireworks incident.

West Yorkshire Police have been contacted for comment by the Telegraph & Argus.

Bradford Council confirmed the rules on fireworks last month.

These included people not being permitted to let off fireworks between 11pm and 7am each night, apart from extensions on special annual occasions including November 5 and Diwali.

Residents can also report any fireworks incidents to West Yorkshire Police on their 101 phone number, on 101 live chat with the time, address and those involved in the incident.

The local authority tweeted this warning as the lead up to Halloween and Bonfire Night often sees an increase in anti-social behaviour.

People can report underage, or unregistered sales, to safer.communities@bradford.gov.uk
