WHAT a way to top off half a century in the business!

Ferno UK began in 1971 and were over the moon to collect the Manufacturer of the Year accolade.

Manufacturing creates economic growth and is the engine that drives the districts economy.

This award celebrates the success of manufacturers in the district.

The judges looked at excellence in the field, ability to succeed, growth, and best practice.

Ferno UK manufactures medical devices, mainly selling to the public sector, and in particular to ambulance services.

Employing 50 people, Ferno UK makes patient transport equipment, such as ambulance trolley and stretchers, as well as backboards and rescue stretchers. The firm moved to its current premises in Cleckheaton in 1996.

Managing director Jon Ellis admits Ferno UK have never been busier during the pandemic due to the products they create.

Firstly, talking to the Telegraph & Argus about winning the award, he said: "It is absolutely fantastic.

"50 years in business this year and I could not be any prouder of my team.

"I have been in the business for 37 years and there is no better than good old manufacturing in, not only England, but Bradford, where I am born and bred.

"The secret to success in our business, because we are in a niche market in the medical device industry, is innovation.

"It is all about looking at that next step, bringing on board new product development so we can be successful in the future."

Mr Ellis added: "It has been challenging with everybody in lockdowns etc. but we have never been busier.

"In the 50 years, we are busier now than ever because people need our products.

"With Covid, the world is changing and the NHS need products so they can deliver healthcare.

"It is not going to be an easy ride going forward, it is going to be difficult for many companies.

"We need to stick together, be vigilant, and stick to our strong foundations for the future."

Mr Ellis describes the patterns on his choice of attire - which he picked up in Camden Market for the special evening - as a "bit bling".

Great Horton based Debar Ltd and Low Moor manufacturer’s Astonish also made the final in this category.
