16-YEAR-OLD Muhammad Amar Farooq became the Yorkshire Champion in the 63KG category on September 19.

The Bradford Boxer, who trains at Purge Boxing Academy in Batley, beat experienced boxer Joe Young who has 33 fights under his belt.

Amar said: “I’m really happy that all the hard work has paid off.

“I’ve been training for a full year for this moment, so I’m glad I won.

Amar trains full time at Purge Boxing Academy, after leaving school last year.

Amar, who was a student at Beckfoot Thornton, went on to beat his opponent who his coach described as being three times more experienced than Amar.

Mohammed Amin Patel, Coach and owner of Purge Boxing Academy said: “We at the club could not be prouder of Amar and his performance.

“Since joining the club he has become a two-time Yorkshire champion.”

Amar is fighting in the nationals and hopes to become a successful boxer.

When asked about who he looks up to in the boxing world, Amar said: “I don’t look up to anyone in the field, I just focus on myself and my training.”

Father Amjad Farooq, 59 said: “I’m so glad he won his fight.

“I know he’s going to be successful.

“I put him in just to build his confidence, but the coach called me back and told me that this boy is really talented.

“he’s been at it for five years now and he’s been Yorkshire Champion twice, I know he’s got a bright future in boxing ahead of him.”

Amar’s father was also a keen boxer for 21 years and now his son is following in his path.

If Amar wins nationals, he could go on to represent Team GB in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Coach Mohammed Amin, said: “Without his parents’ dedication and determination, I don’t think Amar would be in the position that he is in.”
