FOUR males have been fined and one threatened with prison for riding quad bikes in an illegal manner in the Bradford district in the past few months.

The offenders include two boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and were guilty of a range of offences including driving with no licences, insurance or while disqualified.

One man’s offending was so serious that magistrates handed him a suspended jail sentence.

The first man up was Abdullah Mohammed, 24, who was called to Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court on May 21, who admitted his offending.

Mohammed, of Gurbax Court, Thornbury, pleaded guilty to riding an unregistered quad bike in Calverley without valid insurance on October 12 last year. He was ordered to pay a total of £244 – a £120 fine, £90 costs and £34 victim surcharge – and disqualified from driving for six months due to repeat offending.

He was back in court on June 21 after admitting speeding in a Volkswagen Golf GTD on November 19 last year in Leeds – doing 42mph in a 30mph zone – and was fined a total of £204 and handed four penalty points.

Next up, on May 24, was a 15-year-old boy from Bradford, who admitted riding a quad in the city on February 9 without any insurance or a valid driving licence, without a valid test certificate, and riding it on a footpath used by schoolchildren, the elderly and dog walkers.

He was handed a £120 fine and £22 victim surcharge – which his parents will have to pay – and had six points added to his driving record.

Next up on July 5 was 21-year-old Bradley Priestley, of Moresby Road, Woodside, who admitted riding a quad in Leafsway, Woodside, without insurance on September 19 last year.

He was ordered to pay a total of £244 and handed eight penalty points on his licence.

Another Bradford teenager was in court on July 19, with the 15-year-old pleading guilty to riding a quad bike without a licence or insurance on April 20.

He was handed a 12 month conditional discharge, had six points added to his driving record, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £17.

Last up on September 6 was Andrew Lister, 25, of Churchfields, Fagley, who admitted riding a quad bike in Ravenscliffe Woods on March 21 while disqualified from driving and without valid insurance.

Magistrates in Leeds handed Lister an eight-week prison sentence suspended for one year due to the severity of the offending, as he had an 18-month-old child on the quad bike at the time.

He was also suspended from driving for another six months and ordered to pay £213 – a £128 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

To ride a quad bike on public roads, the vehicle has to be registered, taxed, properly insured and the rider must hold a valid driving licence.
