THESE are the 11 Bradford shops and takeaways which were handed a food hygiene rating of zero or one last month by the Food Standards Agency.

The sorry businesses were all visited during August by inspectors from the FSA, and all were told that urgent or major improvement was necessary in their hygiene standards.

Businesses where food is handled – such as pubs, restaurants, takeaways, grocers and convenience stores – get a food hygiene rating, with a five rating the gold standard.

They are judged in three areas:

  • Hygiene of food handling, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage
  • Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, such as layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control
  • Management of food safety, the systems in place to ensure food is safe to eat and staff know about food safety and that standards are maintained

Euro Market in Great Horton Road was the only venue to score zero during August’s visits, with urgent improvement needed in food safety management and major improvement in food handling required. The condition of the building was good however.

Apni Dukaan and Apna Dera, in Victor Road, Manningham scored one, with major improvement in safety management and improvement in cleanliness of facilities needed. Food handling was generally satisfactory.

Idle restaurant Taste of Bengal also received a one rating; while the cleanliness of the restaurant was generally satisfactory, major improvement is necessary in food safety management and improvement needed in food handling.

The ironically named Hygiene China in King’s Road, Wrose, scored a one rating with major improvement needed in food safety management, and improvement needed in cleanliness and food handling.

Madina Roti House in Toller Lane, Girlington, received the same verdict with improvement needed in all areas and major work needed on food safety management.

Bigfellas Express in Great Horton Road was told major work was needed to improve safety management, and food handling also needed to be stepped up; but the building’s cleanliness was generally satisfactory.

While the food handling and cleanliness of the building at Jumbo Chinese takeaway in Main Street, Bingley, were found generally satisfactory, major improvement is needed in safety management, resulting in its one rating.

City centre-based Griller required major improvement in its safety management and improvement in its cleanliness, inspectors said, while its food handling was found to be satisfactory. The Kirkgate based takeaway was given a one star rating.

Also scoring a one rating was Al Shakoor in Leeds Road, Thornbury, which also required major improvements on management, better cleanliness and had satisfactory food handling.

The penultimate outlet given a one rating in August was Taaza Khana, based in Bradford Lane, Thornbury, where major improvement on safety management is needed, cleanliness needs to be better, but food handling is satisfactory.

Finally, Today’s Food in Park Road, Little Horton, was told major improvement was needed on safety management, and improvement was also needed in food handling and cleanliness of facilities.
