A HUGE police scene is in place today following reports of "gunshots" last night.

Traffic is being diverted away from the scene while crime scene investigators comb the area.

Police are appealing for information following two incidents in the Wibsey area, which are believed to be connected.

The first was a report of a gun being fired in Smith Avenue, which was received at 6.11pm yesterday.

Armed officers were scrambled to the scene, then at 6.23pm, police then received a report of gunshots and vehicles in collision on nearby Holroyd Hill.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Enquiries have now established that a firearm was discharged in the Smith Avenue incident, but that no injuries or damage was reported.

"Four people have been arrested in connection with the above matters and remain in custody at this time. A number of vehicles have also been recovered for further tests."

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Farrell, of Bradford District Police, said: “I am appealing to anyone who may have information about what occurred in the Wibsey area last night to come forward.

“All reports of firearms discharges and disorder are taken seriously and enquiries are underway into the circumstances of these incidents and to identify those who were involved.”

Councillor David Green (Lab, Wibsey) said: “Clearly these kind of incidents are going to be of real concern to local people.

“It’s horrific when guns are being let off in residential areas and people feel they have a right to both terrify innocent bystanders but also use firearms to settle their disputes.

“We are very concerned but we are also delighted that the police have made arrests and we would echo the request for anybody who has any information to come forward.”

His fellow Labour ward councillor Ralph Berry added: “This is shocking and worrying but we are glad to hear that people are in custody.”

He said as many firearms as possible need to be taken out of circulation and added:

“The community does not need this association with it. It’s not the sort of news we want to get about Wibsey.”

One man who lives close to the scene told the Telegraph & Argus: “A lot of fireworks go off around here, it’s all day everyday, I just thought it was those.

“I was shocked when I saw it [the police cordon], it used to be right quiet.”

Anyone with information which may assist this investigation is asked to contact Bradford District CID on 101, or via the West Yorkshire Police website quoting log 1332 of September 21.

Information can also be reported anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or online.
