A WIDE range of charities, supporting children and adults in many ways, have been nominated for a share of the Telegraph & Argus’s £25,000 cash giveaway.

See below for details of how to nominate your favourite local charity. Here are some of the charities readers have been nominating:

* Margaret Carey Foundation. Says Helen Rowlands: “This charity, based in Bradford, delivers bike and wheelchair maintenance workshops in prisons, young offenders institutions, approved premises and communities in Bradford. The charity rescues scrapped bicycles and wheelchairs that are no longer in use and sets up workshops where they're cleaned, adjusted and repaired to a high standard. Once refurbished, a proportion of the bikes and wheelchairs are distributed to communities in need, in the UK and in developing countries, with a proportion sold to raise funds for the charity. Covid has severely restricted the ability to deliver the workshops since March 2020. Some community activities were delivered online and as restrictions have been lifted face-to-face activities have re-started. It has taken much longer for workshops to re-start in prisons and the charity is keen to support the prison instructors to deliver much-needed training to promote rehabilitation and skills development, offering individuals a real chance to improve their lives.”

* Child Brain Injury Trust. Says Sue Dyer: “This charity supported our family after my daughter suffered a cardiac arrest when she was 15, her brain was starved of oxygen and she was left with a hypoxic brain injury. She had to learn to walk, talk, eat etc again. They supported us in so many ways, from taking her to school, helping with college, rehabilitation and general support to all the family. I’m not sure how we would have managed without them. There’s not enough awareness for brain injury, especially this amazing charity.”

* Emmaus Bradford. Says Jan Andrew: “They have worked tirelessly over the last few years to raise funds to open an Emmaus community for formerly homeless people, and are almost at the point of realising this goal. During the last year over 7,000 items have been saved from landfill and re-used and recycled through the two Emmaus shops. We have employed four members of staff and created several volunteer opportunities."

* St Mary Magdalane CIC. Says Pamela Kershaw: “They worked throughout Covid, producing the Young in Covid film. Two teenagers created and designed Youth Cutz, a mental health barbers. It would be great if this can grow further and another movie made to hear the voice of young people.”

* There are less than two weeks to go to nominate your favourite charity for a share of the Telegraph & Argus’s £25,000 cash giveaway.

Our parent company’s charitable arm, The Gannett Foundation, is giving £125,000 to charities nationwide and we have £25,000 for the Bradford district.

To nominate a charity go to thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/readerschoice and fill in the form. Or write, with name and address of the charity you’re nominating and why, to: Readers’ Choice Cash For Charity Nominations, Telegraph & Argus, West Wing,New Hall, Bradford BD5 8FF by October 3.

Once all nominations have been received, the T&A editor will select eight of the most popular local charities for this year’s grants scheme. We’re then going to put the power to allocate the cash back into your hands - for four weeks, readers will be invited to collect tokens from our newspapers which can then be sent to collection points across our district or posted.

Each token collected will then be used to allocate cash to the nominated charity - so if your favourite charity collects 50per cent of all to tokens collected, it will receive 50per cent of the £25,000!
