A CAR passenger said "I can be the driver if you want" to a police officer who had caught the vehicle doing 104mph on a motorway.

PC Martin Willis - who is better known as Motorway Martin - posted about the bizarre interaction on his Twitter page this morning, at 4.20am.

The officer pulled over a black Audi, as he had caught it doing 104mph on the motorway.

The vehicle was stopped on the hard shoulder, right next to a sign stating: "Workforce in road, slow."

A passenger first got out of the car and wandered over to the police vehicle and PC Willis.

They refused to tell the officer who had been driving.

The other passenger in the Audi then approached the officer and said, "I can be the driver if you want."

PC Willis discovered the actual driver had climbed into the back of the Audi and then gave false details when questioned.

The driver eventually stopped "lying", after a full hour.

PC Willis seized the Audi and also reported the driver for no insurance, speeding and a licence offence.

The officer said on Twitter: "Passenger comes to my car and won't say who's been driving.

"Other passenger says, 'I can be the driver if you want.'

"Driver, who had climbed in the back, gives false details.

"One hour later, stops lying.

"Car seized and driver reported for no insurance, speeding and licence offence."
