SIGNIFICANT progress has been made on constructing the new £15m Spen Valley Leisure Centre which is due to open in early 2022.

Kirklees Council has confirmed that the new sports facility is to be handed over to Kirklees Active Leisure in December, ready to be kitted out before it opens its doors to the public.

But first the new pools will be filled with water next month.

An exact date for the Liversedge centre's opening has still to be confirmed.

The new centre replaces the former Spenborough Pool, which was closed down in August 2019 after 50 years of service, and demolished later that year.

It will have an eight-lane 25m pool as well as a secondary activity pool with a moveable floor with an adjustable depth.

There will also be a large gym, two exercise studios and a cycling studio.

There will also be two changing villages which will include family cubicles, baby change and large team changing areas.

Councillor Shabir Pandor, leader of Kirklees Council, said of the latest work: “We continue to make significant progress on the new Spen Valley Leisure Centre.

"It is exciting to see just how close we are getting to having this state of the art facility open for use.

"The pools are due to be filled in October as it takes some time to get them ready for swimming.

"The building is on course to be handed over to Kirklees Active Leisure in mid-December 2021.

"This is when the transformation to fully functioning leisure centre will take place. The exact opening date is still to be confirmed but will be in early 2022.”

A blog shows the progress of the project since the plans were first revealed in March 2019.

Its most recent pictures in April show the progress of tiling and grouting the swimming pools, as well as installation of the pool's filters and pumps, and progress externally to lay tarmac to create the car park.

Earlier updates show the entrance and lobby areas taking shape and underfloor heating being installed in the changing rooms.

In March Cllr Pandor and KAL Board of Trustees chairman, Dawn Stephenson, marked the progress of the building by taking part in the signing of a steel beam which makes up the structure of the large exercise studio.

Work by construction company Kier began last summer, a year after the scheme was approved by planners.

It is the first major leisure infrastructure in the north of the borough for decades.

Spenborough Pool was opened by the Duchess of Kent in 1969.
