Kirklees Council set in motion plans to house refugees coming from Afghanistan.

The Council had a meeting earlier this month where the issue was discussed at length.

Kirklees are yet to say how many refugees they will take in and where they will house them, but the Council did state that support would be offered with every step.

Council staff from Housing Solutions and in the International New Arrivals team will meet and support the family intensively from arrival.

The Council will help them with all immediate needs including health, understanding life in the UK and Kirklees and children starting school.

Refugees will receive clothing if needed, as well as support in learning the language.

Councillor Pattison said: “Kirklees will be playing its part, as we always do, by housing people arriving from Afghanistan as part of this response and this is something we will be proud to support.

“Details have not been confirmed by the Home Office yet, so we don’t know how many people will come here or where they will be staying.”

The Council are doing all they can to ensure that the refugees coming Kirklees will have the most support and will be provided with the necessities to start life in the UK.

Cllr Pattison highlighted that, donations from people in the ward have been flooding in and people seem more than happy to help.

In the past Kirklees Council have housed and supported over 2000 refugees and this number Is set to rise.

Kirklees Council are looking for volunteers to become Welcome Mentors, who provide buddying support and are aware of what it feels like to restart life.

Any organisations that can offer support and activities for refugees have been told to contact the council.

While Kirklees are happy to help refugees, the Council believes that all districts and wards across the country should play an equal part in the resettlement scheme.
