A UNIQUE indoor golfing experience is the latest new leisure business to open in the city centre.

Looney Golf is due to open in the former Boyes department store on North Parade later this week, and its owners hope it will be another popular addition to the top of town area.

Planning permission to turn one of several units in the department store into an indoor crazy golf centre was granted earlier this year, and now work on the attraction has been completed.

The Looney Golf unit couldn’t look more different from the former department store, with neon decorations and features that include a huge gorilla.

There will be two courses for punter to choose from - a jungle theme, which includes jungle beasts including apes and snakes as obstacles, and a neon theme.

The opening will come just days after another leisure business opened in a neighbouring unit - VR City gaming centre.

Norris Royal, the man behind Looney Golf, said while leisure attractions like this were common in London and other big cities, there had been few opening in Bradford in recent years.

He said: “We’ve worked with local investors to create more of a leisure offer. Bradford didn’t have such a vibrant nightlife - there aren’t many places where families can go to socialise. People would have to travel miles out of the city.

“We hope businesses like this make the city a more attractive place.

“There used to be a lot of nightlife and clubs in the city. We want to attract people back into the city centre. We want people to enjoy what the city has to offer.”

He said the business is suitable for children as young as six to adults, and there will also be a retro games room in the unit.

In recent years North Parade has become one of the more popular areas of the city centre in the evening, with numerous bars opening. But there have been calls for more leisure activities to attract people to the top of town, a call that Looney Golf and other businesses are answering.

Mr Royal hopes that this and the other new businesses help boost tourism in the city, as well as being popular with locals.

He also praised Bradford Council’s plans to transform the area. Earlier this year the authority revealed proposals to revamp the Oastler Square area that could lead to the square being replaced with a “public green space.”

Mr Royal said: “The Council are working to encourage people into the city centre, and I’m relishing the opportunity to help bring more life back to the area.”

Looney Golf will open later this week.
