SIR - I keep seeing news reports regarding casualties on our roads. The latest I have seen is of the A6033 Hebden Bridge Road in Oxenhope. It says it was listed in the top 50 dangerous roads. It recently had a £1.4 million upgrade of safety measures.

I don't believe you can make a road safe. How can it be said that a road is dangerous? Surely its the drivers in the vehicles who make a road dangerous.

Whenever I am out and about it is almost certain we will come across many drivers who are putting themselves and others at risk. Most of it is down to speed. One of the craziest speed limits is the national speed limit (60mph) which is seen on narrow country lanes. If a driver is allowed to travel at 60mph, regardless of if it is feasible, they will attempt to travel at that speed. That makes them dangerous.

Surely the way to make the roads safe would be not to allow any vehicles on it or to reduce the speeds to a more sensible one.

Don't blame the roads, it's the drivers. They will continue to drive faster than they should, regardless of speed limits.
