THE definition of Islamophobia is being debated in parliament, two years after the government initially agreed.

Bradford MPs Naz Shah and Imran Hussain were both present at the debate.

Naz Shah said: “We are here today because the Government has failed British Muslims.

“Five academics and over 700 Muslim organisations have endorsed the definition.

“It has been a decade since Baroness Warsi said Islamophobia passed the dinner table test.

“It is clear that this is not a matter of the Government not trying; it is a matter of a government not caring. “

Imran Hussain said: ““Indeed, this normalisation of Islamophobia has become so widespread.

“We need to legislate against this, we need to stop talking about this and start acting.”

Islamophobia and the government’s handling of it has been a pressing topic over the last decade, increasingly so over the last couple of years.

Claims of institutional Islamophobia within the Tory party have been rife and the government are being pressured to adopt a definition of the term so that action can be taken.

Islamophobia has been called an evil to society and has been described to have a devastating impact on British Muslims.
