In a full council meeting on 8 September, members discussed their role in supporting those impacted by the situation in Afghanistan.

The current number of refugees entering the country is unknown, however the council fully support providing housing for refugees.

Cllr Carole Pattison, Cabinet Member for Learning, Aspiration and Communities, said: "People have lost their lives, others are living in fear and those fleeing Afghanistan for safety face uprooting their whole lives and moving to a strange new country, with the challenges of adjusting to a completely new life.

“We have to play a part in helping."

"Kirklees will be playing its part, as we always do, by housing people arriving from Afghanistan as part of this response and it's something we will be proud to support. "

"Details haven't been confirmed by the Home Office yet, so we don’t know how many people will come here or where they will be staying."

Since 2014, over 2000 refugees have been resettled in the Kirklees area.
