A WARNING for thunderstorms is in place for the entire Bradford district today, but when, if at all, will the storms hit the district?

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms across the district, alerting people to “heavy showers and thunderstorms that have the potential to bring surface water flooding in a few places, and disruption to travel”.

The warning is in place from 10am today until 8pm, and as well as Bradford covers the whole of the North, Scotland, most of the Midlands, Wales, Northern Ireland, and parts of the South West.

The storms are “unlikely”, the Met Office said, but where they do hit the impact is expected to be severe.

The chief forecaster warned: “Following overnight rain and showers, more intense showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out fairly widely from late-morning, before easing during the evening.

“Whilst many areas will miss the most intense storms, torrential downpours are likely in a few places.

“Where these occur, there is potential for 20 to 30mm of rain in less than an hour and up to 40mm in two hours.

“This will have the potential to generate surface water flooding, especially if it falls over an urban area.”

The forecast for Bradford currently says there is a 30 to 40 per cent chance of rain between 3pm and 6pm, with a small chance of further rain in the evening.

Temperatures are due to stay hot and humid through the day, with highs of 23 degrees Celsius.

Where storms hit, there is “a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds”.

The weather may also affect train and bus services, causing delays and cancellations, while spray and sudden flooding could cause difficult driving conditions and some road closures, and some rural communities may be cut off by floodwater.
