The former Grey Horse in Long Row, Horsforth - the T&A's Pub of the Week - was renamed in 2012 in honour of the Olympic triathlete brothers who grew up in the town.

There’s a Brownlee breakfast on the menu for fans to get their teeth into: two rashers of bacon, two eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, tomato, toast, black pudding and hash brown. It’s hearty fare after a morning’s swim, cycle, or run - or, if you’re looking to follow in the brother’s footsteps and if you're up to it, all three. Brunch is served daily from 10am.

As a main, the Brownlee burger - served with smoked applewood cheddar, streaky bacon, crispy onions, chunky chips and more - also cuts the mustard. “It’s one of our most popular meals,” said general manager Tracy Carroll, who has been involved since 2012.

At that time the pub - managed by Nick, Tracy’s partner, and Chris Green, who also run the Stansfield Arms in Apperley Bridge and the Old White Horse in Bingley - underwent an extensive refurbishment.

The pub attracts many family groups. “We have a lot of people coming along for birthday parties and special occasions,” said Tracy. “We do a great Sunday roast.”

The children’s menu, for youngsters aged up to ten, also gives a nod to the famous sporting brothers - it’s called Little Brownlee.

A steady business trade is made up of people who work locally, who come for lunch and dinner, and special seafood menu is currently a hit. “There is something for everyone on the menu,” said Tracy, a graduate in hospitality management with Leeds Beckett University.

The stone-built pub has a cosy, contemporary interior. A garden room with a retractable roof was added in 2019. “Diners love it - when the sun is shining we take the roof off, it’s lovely.”

There’s a sizeable beer garden. “At present we also have a marquee over the front decking area which suits diners who want to sit outside, but under cover," said Tracy.

Dogs are welcome at the pub, attracting walkers from the local area. “We get all sorts of dogs. We are very dog-friendly and have dog beds and treats for them.”

Tracy and the team were eager to get back to work following the lockdown. “We missed everyone - staff and customers. People working in this business are together at times when everyone else is out having fun, so we form a close team. We missed each other as well as the many familiar faces who come here for a drink or a meal.”

At the bar Timothy Taylor’s is the mainstay, with local ales also featuring. “We rotate them, with beers from breweries such as Saltaire and Kirkstall, that haven’t had to travel far.”

Cocktails change with the seasons.

The team relish being busy. “The past few months have been a learning curve, but we are all happy to be back, helping people to have a good time.”
