WEST Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin has been urged to review plans for numerous road schemes across the region.

Local Green Councillors have said plans to widen numerous West Yorkshire routes, including the Canal Road corridor in Bradford, or build new roads entirely, go against pledges made by Councils to tackle climate change.

Bradford Council is among local authorities to have declared a Climate Emergency.

They have written to Ms Brabin to raise the issue, but say so far they have not had a response.

The new role of West Yorkshire Mayor includes greater funding powers over local infrastructure projects - many of which have been proposed by West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The Green Party has asked Ms Brabin to announce a review of the road building schemes being funded by WYCA following a similar announcement by the Welsh devolved government.

Councillor Matt Edwards, who represents Tong Ward on Bradford Council, said, “The time for action is now. West Yorkshire is one of the largest and most economically important regions in the UK and sadly that also means that we are one of the largest contributors to the climate-wrecking emissions which have got us into this situation.

“We hear a lot of talk from our Council leaders about how we need to do more to tackle climate change – but what is missing is the policies to deliver on this.

"Our councils are failing to take this dire situation seriously and are continuing to move forward with environmentally damaging choices.”

Ms Brabin's office told the Local Democracy Reporting Service it would not be commenting on the Green's request, but pointed out that not all the road schemes would increase carbon emissions, adding that some included new cycle and walking facilities.
