ARMED officers were scrambled to a street yesterday after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a group of youths, with one seen brandishing a machete, police said.

They were called to Claremont Grove, Pudsey, just before 5.20pm.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Armed officers were deployed to the area and found a 15-year-old male nearby with a serious knife wound to his elbow. He was taken hospital for treatment.

"His injuries were not considered life threatening.

"A 16-year-old male was subsequently arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent in relation to the incident.

"He remains in custody and enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Leeds District CID via 101 quoting crime reference 13210440148 or online via www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat.

"Information can be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Stuart Andrew, Conservative MP for Pudsey, branded the incident as "extremely worrying".

He added: "Councillor Amanda Carter and I recently met with the police to discuss incidents of this very nature. Sadly last night’s incident highlights that further work needs to be done.

"I am particularly concerned about the ease with which people, especially young people, are able to access this sort of weapon and have raised these concerns with a Minister at the Home Office."
