THE founder of a Bradford-based mental health group has been recognised by Boris Johnson for his outstanding voluntary work.

Elliott Cousins, 28, of Wibsey, has been named a ‘Point of Light’ by the Prime Minister for his success in setting up The Speak In Club, a wellbeing hub where people are encouraged to use exercise to maintain and improve their mental health.

The club holds Wednesday night “walk and talk” sessions at two different venues in the district – Dudley Hill Rugby Club and Buttershaw St Paul’s Cricket Club – where people struggling with their mental health can meet for a coffee and confidential discussion and seek professional support.

The club also organises bootcamps and other activities to help those struggling with their fitness, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Elliott, an engineering manager at Morrisons Farmer’s Boy factory in Cemetery Road,  founded the club during last year’s lockdown after experiencing issues with his own mental health.

"I have been blown away by the help and support I have received in setting up The Speak In Club and this honour is not just a reflection of my own had work but everyone who has supported the organisation," said Elliott.

“It’s incredibly humbling to receive such an accolade and obviously I’m very grateful to the Prime Minister for recognising the club’s achievements over what has been a very difficult year for many, many people,” he added.

'Point of Light' is a daily award programme set up by Boris Johnson and supported by all Members of Parliament to highlight the contribution that volunteers, charity leaders and campaigners are making to their communities.
