A MAJOR motorway in the North has resembled a "long car park" today as people get away for Bank Holiday.

It is the final extended weekend of the year and the first since all Covid-19 restrictions were removed and it seems people are taking advantage.

Whether it is going for a staycation as far afield as Cornwall, or travelling to visit friends or family in a different city, thousands have taken to the country's roads today.

Bradfordians and their various neighbours in West Yorkshire have to use the M62 to access many locations across the UK.

This has had a huge impact on traffic, according to a West Yorkshire Police officer who covers motorways in the area.

PC Martin Willis - who is better known on Twitter as Motorway Martin - initially tweeted just after 2pm to say: "It's busy on the motorways today. Really busy."

Later today, at 5pm, he then revealed that the M62 specifically had "resembled a long car park" throughout Friday, with numerous incidents adding to the issue.

He said: "To anyone that has had to travel on the M62 in West Yorkshire today I'm sure you'll agree it has resembled a long car park at times and can best be described as motorway misery.

"Much of the congestion has been caused by numerous incidents.

"Please be patient and courteous."

PC Willis shared a photo of a map alongside the tweet that showed a long red line running the length of the M62, which indicates heavy traffic.
