A BRADFORD councillor has said the arrest of a woman on suspicion of a firearms offence shows "how guns continue to blight our area".

Footage emerged yesterday that showed a woman walking nonchalantly down Canal Road, near the Shell garage, with what looked to be a pistol in her hand.

It is reported she was whirling it in the air before armed officers directed the woman to lay on the ground and swooped in to detain her.

A 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of a firearms offence.

Councillor Suahil Choudhry (Lab, Bolton and Undercliffe) praised police for their swift action and said "law-abiding" residents are fed up with gun crime.

He added: "I understand that the police have arrested a woman on suspicion of firearms offences, after she was brandishing a gun yesterday evening.

"The police have done a great job by apprehending the woman, which will provide some reassurance in the community.

"However, this incident once again shows how guns continue to blight our area.

"They have no place in our community.

"Law-abiding residents have had enough of gun crime and just want to get on with their lives, without the fear that the presence of guns creates.

"To see a firearm being brandished on the road is very frightening, and it makes you wonder how people are getting access to such weapons.

"The safety of all residents, across Bradford, is paramount, and we must work with the police to ensure safety across the district."

Officers recovered a gas powered BB gun and canisters from the scene on Thursday.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
