A banned driver who smashed into a wall while being pursued by the police through Bradford’s Holme Wood Estate has been locked up for eight months.

Mohammed Aslam was awaiting sentence for driving dangerously on motorways in Lancashire at more than 100mph when officers on patrol spotted him speeding along Tong Street in Bradford with other vehicles.

Aslam, 22, of Brighton Street, Heckmondwike, was at the wheel of his VW Golf when he was seen going too fast, braking and doing a U turn on November 8 last year.

He was pursued in a blue light chase along Broadstone Way when he drove at double the 20mph speed limit, failed to give way at Holme Lane and went straight into a wall.

The Golf had extensive front-end damage and was a write-off, Bradford Crown Court heard.

The airbags inflated and the car was filled with smoke.

When the officers got there, Aslam was sitting in the back behind the driver’s seat and claimed that he wasn’t behind the wheel. He and his passenger lied saying the driver had fled the scene but Aslam’s coat was on the driver’s seat and his phone was in the front footwell.

He went on to admit the offence of dangerous driving.

In May last year, Aslam was caught driving dangerously on motorways, doing more than 100mph.

He appeared before magistrates in Lancashire in October last year and was given a suspended sentence order at Preston Crown Court in February.

He was the subject of an interim driving ban when he was arrested for dangerous driving in Bradford.

Jonathan Turner said in mitigation that the Bradford pursuit was short-lived because Aslam hit the wall.

He had panicked because he was a banned driver.

A report from the probation service said that his “deficit in forward thinking” needed to be addressed.

He helped his family to care for a severely disabled relative, Mr Turner stated.

He said Aslam had suffered because his £4,000 car was wrecked and he couldn’t claim on the insurance.

He had passed his driving test and there were no aggravating features such as drugs being found in the vehicle.

But Recorder Patrick Palmer said the offence happened in the month after Aslam was given the interim driving ban in Lancashire.

He had lied to the police after crashing the Golf and he had a passenger with him.

Aslam was jailed for eight months and banned from driving for 16 months and until he passes an extended test.
