TODAY is National Dog Day, celebrating pet dogs, rescue dogs, working dogs and all the dogs that love, protect and guide us humans.

T&A readers have been sharing photos of their four-legged friends and telling us why they're so special.

Here are just some of the many photos we've had. Don't worry if yours isn't in today - we will be featuring more of them in coming weeks.

Above is Nala, an Alaskan Malamute. Owner Chris Dawson of Keighley tells us: "I suffered with PTSD and sometimes even leaving my home can be a challenge. Nala not only helps me to overcome that but she also brings a smile to the faces of everyone she meets."

* Bonus, a four-month-old crossbreed, "has changed our lives" says owner Natalia Rzeznikiewicz. "He is the most loving creature in the world and I cannot imagine our life without him. He makes everyday special by showing how he appreciates our love. He snores like an old man, but we love this."

* Lilly lost a leg after she was injured on a road. Says owner Rebecca Tate: "She came into the vets where I work after being involved in a road traffic accident. We tried internal and external fixation but couldn’t save her leg, so we had to amputate. Now she’s a Tripawd.

She was also deaf as her ears were so inflamed from ear infections that were left untreated for so long. Now, through correct diet and supplements, she has her hearing fully back. She’s special to us as she has shown that nothing is impossible, and as Lilly says ‘four paws are overrated’.

* Tyler is a happy Great Dane. Owner Lucy Donnison says: "Tyler is our everything, he is so funny and such a goofball and a proper big character. He is our whole world and makes even the wet cold days a whole lot brighter.

"Tyler is one of 13 puppies, he is three on Friday. His mum, dad and siblings appeared in the Telegraph & Argus two years ago when they all met up in a pub beer garden to celebrate their first birthday."

* Mac was "our big cuddly bear" says owner Anna Brook. "This is our recently passed Mac. Our big cuddly bear who was our protector for 12 years. Here he is with our other dog Luna when she was a pup."

* Dan Dan has a famous TV show to thank for her name. Says owner John Murphy: "Her proper name is Daenerys. She’s quite a character and a big help in getting over the loss of our other dog, Lola. Dan Dan’s brother is with extended family - he’s called Tyrion."

Game of Thrones fans may have guessed the connection...

* Bruzer is very much missed, says Julie Seed: "He was was with us for 16 years. He was such a lot of fun and very loving. Our best friend!"

* Smudge is a seven-year-old Boston Terrier. Says owner Laura Oliver" Smudge loves to get involved in the kids bath time and doesn’t like to be left out when it comes to talcing time."

* Peppa is striking a pose in a cute outfit. Says owner Sanita Baumane: "Peppa is our little girl, little Cutie Pie. She is JUST AMAZING and we love her so much."

* Bohdi is a seven-year-old Jack Russell. Says owner Robert Britton of Shipley: "I didn't want a dog but my missus and kids did. So we decided to make a compromise...and got a dog.

"Since we've have had him, he's bonded so much with me and I really couldn't imagine my life or house without him now. I call him my shadow, as every time I turn around he's there.

"He absolutely adores humans and is really good with my four children. He's not so good with other dogs though, as he's a bit grumpy. Typical terrier!"
