AT THE hub of one of the UK’s ‘up-and-coming’ areas, Number 33 is a place to see and be seen.

The stylish, contemporary bar sits in Farsley - named as an up-and-coming area to watch in the The Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2021 guide.

An ‘up-and-coming creative neighbourhood’, is how the judges described the west Leeds town. With its quirky décor and buzzing atmosphere, Number 33 certainly reflects that, and is our Telegraph & Argus Pub of the Week.

Formerly the New Inn, the bar was completely refurbished three years ago by Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars. A garden was created, complete with a garden room housed inside a wood-faced shipping container painted inside with stunning murals by renowned street artist Nicholas Dixon, who lives locally.

Run by licensees, husband and wife team Jamie and Sally Hanson, the bar is managed by Ed Whittingham.

With a background in sales/customer service, Ed has his love of cricket to thank for the job he loves. “I play cricket for Calverley and that’s where I met Jamie, who also plays for them. I was looking for a bit of part-time work and it grew from there.”

He has not looked back. “I absolutely love it, there is such a good atmosphere and I meet so many people. I have definitely found my calling.”

The bar has a varied drinks menu including craft and premium beers are as well as a range of gins.

Ed’s own favourite tipple is rum, “Old J or Foursquare - with ginger ale and lime.”

One popular addition to the Number 33 experience is street food, available from vendors outside the premises from Friday to Sunday. “We have done this since coming out of lockdown,” said Ed.

Cuisine from across the world is on offer with different weekly experiences. “We have had Italian, Greek, Mexican and Canadian. It’s really successful, people come and have a drink and try the street food.

“We are lucky we have a lot of outside space, and we have erected a couple of marquees too,” said Ed. “You can walk from the shipping container to the terrace, through bi-fold doors.”

Customers can sit on sofas, barrel tables or on bar stools to admire the artwork.

“The artwork in the shipping container is fantastic. Nicholas Dixon has a unique style," said Ed. "He has artwork across Leeds, including a large Leeds United mural at Pudsey Market.”

The bar attracts many families during the day, and a lively mix of customers on an evening. “People sometimes dance in the bar as well."

Number 33 attracts many regulars. “There are also a lot of new faces coming along," said Ed. Farsley has a great community, an old-school feel. It’s a town where people meet up and talk - we were not surprised when it appeared in the best places to live guide.”

That’s not the only accolade the pub has received: Number 33 has been voted as one of the top three pubs by local news service Leeds Live.

People are happy to be free from lockdown, said Ed, who despite his busy schedule, still finds time to play cricket. “It’s great to have a bit of normality again. I felt a bit like a school teacher asking people to sit down with their drink and other things, but everyone was fine and understood the reasons for it.

“A lot of people had not seen each other for ages and were so happy when they got together.”
