ANGER has been voiced after a burst water main caused anguish for villagers.

Some properties were flooded as the drama unfolded in Steeton.

Chapel Road was closed, forcing some motorists to travel the wrong way down a one-way street to access parts of the village.

Yorkshire Water has come under fire for the way it has handled the situation, which first arose more than a week ago.

Resident Susan Pyrah said: "Yorkshire Water did not resolve the problem and consequently there has been further flooding.

"Understandably they had to keep turning the water off while they stemmed the flood. But they have done this without prior warning to the residents of Steeton. We only became aware when trying to use our taps or flush the toilet.

"Surely it was not beyond their wit to be able to inform us, through social media or recorded messages to landline phones. We would then be able to at least fill our kettles.

"Apparently at one point while the water was off, some bottled water was left for us to collect ourselves – but no one let me know it was there!

"And a standpipe was set-up at Queen Street, but this burst and caused another flood. The standpipe was then removed.

"I was amazed to learn that when water workers attend a flood, they do not have sand bags available. I would consider this elementary.

"No one has seemed able to say how long the situation would continue.

"I phoned Yorkshire Water for information and was promised a return call – but that didn't happen."

When the Keighley News contacted the company, it said its contractors were on site and "hoping to have everything resolved in the next few days".

A spokesperson added: "We have had a number of bursts in Steeton – sometimes when one pipe bursts it can have a knock-on effect, leaving nearby pipes vulnerable to bursting too.

"We know that the resulting supply interruptions and roadworks can be frustrating for local residents.

e’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
