CAMPAIGNERS staged another protest today against plans to close Haworth Post Office.

People gathered near the branch at the top of Main Street to demonstrate their opposition.

Post Office Ltd is proposing to shut the branch and relocate facilities to the village's new Co-op store, in Station Road.

Several thousand people have signed a petition opposing the move.

And the public is being urged to make its views known via a consultation, which runs until Friday (August 27).

Worth Valley councillor Rebecca Poulsen, who was among those at today's protest, said: "Today the community came together again, joined by MP Robbie Moore, to send a strong message that the community needs a post office at the top of Haworth Main Street as well as the new facility planned in the Co-op.

"A single facility within the Co-op will not offer the same level of service to the village as a full post office counter.

"With more and more businesses now offering online sales the post office is busier than ever and is the only place to withdraw cash at the top of the village. Many elderly residents would not be able to access facilities so far away at the Co-op – and up and down two steep hills.

"Post Office Ltd’s own field manager has visited the village and agrees that it should have the current post office branch and the new service in the Co-op – so I am calling on the company to listen to local people and its own staff and keep both facilities.

"I would encourage everyone to make their views known by completing the consultation before it closes on Friday."
