SIR - It must be recalled that at one time only 10per cent of all grades awarded at A level were at grade A as opposed to 45per cent today.
It is quite clearly the case that the criterion for deciding marks has changed drastically over the previous 40 to 50 years.
At one time a grade A was given for demonstrable quality and both employers and universities had confidence in the grades awarded. Unfortunately the same does not apply today, an obvious consequence of grade inflation.
