STEP back into Bradford’s Brown Muff and Rackhams stores.
Brown Muff & Co was founded in 1814 by Elizabeth Brown at Market Street, Bradford, as a drapery. The store expanded over the years, with new departments including a beauty parlour which opened in 1927.
Known as the ‘Harrods of the North’, Brown Muff was popular with shoppers from across the region. Initially a drapers, hosiers and tailors, it went on to sell high quality clothing.
Popular for over a century, Brown Muff was bought by House of Fraser in the 1970s, and opened as Rackhams in 1977. The smart department store look remained, with a lift attendant in a uniform waiting to take shoppers up and down floors.
Rackhams was one of only two department stores in Bradford city centre by the 1990s. It was a sad day for Bradford when its Rackhams store closed in 1995.
