A NEW arcade with a mixture of retro and modern day games will open in Bradford city centre this weekend.

Flashback Arcade will open in the former loading bay building of the Telegraph & Argus, on Drake Street opposite Bradford Crown Court.

It will feature classic arcade games including Space Invaders, Street Fighter II, Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat II.

It also include a Japanese dance machine and Star Wars and The Simpsons-themed games.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

The site will have its grand opening tomorrow at noon.

Owner Mohammed Patel has spent £250,000 on the machines for the business, some of which have been imported from Japan.

The site will include almost 100 arcade machines, air hockey tables and a cafe area.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Mr Patel says he wants the arcade to have a family friendly feel and appeal to different generations.

He said: "There is a real mixture of games, we're targeting it as a family venue. We want everyone to visit; boys, girls, men and women.

"I have been in the arcades business for the last 30 years. This is a collection of everything.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

"We have retro games and modern ones, so there is something for everyone. This is something for Bradford.

"I'm looking forward to opening tomorrow. I have been working on this for the last six months, seven days a week.

"The building was a shell when we took it on, a lot of work has gone into it."

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Mr Patel added with the site being so close to the Bradford Interchange train station, he hopes it will attract even more visitors.

Hugely popular in the 1980s and early 90s, the number of arcades declined as home gaming systems became more affordable.

But in recent years there has been a big resurgence in arcades - with retro gaming centres opening across the country.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

The Telegraph & Argus announced last year that it had sold its iconic Hall Ings headquarters to a developer.

There would be no gambling machines in the new business.

There will also not be the traditional scramble for visitors to slot change every time they want to play on a machine.

Instead visitors will pay a one-off entry fee, giving them unlimited use of the games.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Adults pay £15 while under-16s pay £10. Children aged under five have free entry if they are accompanied by an adult. A family pass, for two adults and two children, costs £40.

The arcade will be closed every Monday and Tuesday, on Wednesday it will be open between noon and 10pm, Thursday noon to 11pm, Friday 2pm to midnight, Saturday noon to 11pm and Sunday noon to 10pm.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

The arcade will also be available for party hire.
