POLICE across West Yorkshire have seized more than 45,000 cars over a two year period, data has shown.

New research reveals the UK’s car seize hotspots with over 479,000 seizures being made across 2019 and 2020 nationally.

The research, from comparethemarket.com, has analysed police force data from 2019 and 2020, obtained using Freedom of Information requests. The research found that West Yorkshire has had the 2nd highest number of car seizures since 2019 with 45,167 taken off the roads.

In total 23,703 were seized in 2019 with fewer in 2020 but still reaching 21,464.

The top ten force areas with the highest number put West Midlands top with 51,531 seizures in 2019 and 2020.

Third place was Surrey with 26,855 over two years followed by Lancashire (25,399), Kent (24,651), South Yorkshire (20,507), Avon and Somerset (19,394), Leicestershire (16,540), Northumbria (16,331) and Nottinghamshire (15,951).

No insurance/driving licence was the most common reason for a car being seized followed by road traffic collision, stolen, used in crime and illegally parked.
