DELAYS are expected on the M62 throughout the evening following an earlier lorry fire.

The westbound carriageway was closed between junction 25 (Brighouse) and junction 24 (Huddersfield).

Traffic has now been released but lane one, of four, remains closed.

Highways England said motorists face residual delays of at least 70 minutes, with more than six miles of congestion, spanning back past junction 27 for the M621.

People are being urged to allow extra time for journeys.

Five fire engines from Cleckheaton, Huddersfield, Odsal and two from Dewsbury rushed to the scene where the Morrisons lorry was ablaze.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen billowing into the sky across the motorway and traffic was at a standstill.

Watch commander Martin Bleasdale said: "On arrival the tractor unit of the vehicle was fully involved and five appliances attended to tackle the fire."

The cause of the fire is unknown and currently under investigation, but it's believed it could be a vehicle fault, said Watch Commander Bleasdale.

The driver of the lorry was uninjured and managed to get out of the vehicle before crews arrived.

All firefighters have now left the scene and have handed over to Highways England.
