NEW figures have revealed where people have moved to Bradford from, and where Bradfordians have left the district to.

The figures from the Office for National Statistics track internal migration within the UK in the year to June 2020, identifying how many people have moved between certain areas in the past 12 months.

It found that in the year to June 2020, a total of 17,591 left Bradford for other parts of the country, while 15,555 came to Bradford from other parts of the country, meaning net migration in the district fell by more than 2,000 that year.

People migrated to Bradford from 301 of the 308 local authorities that year. The area which most people moved to Bradford from was Leeds, with 3,326 moving to the district.

This was followed by 1,172 people coming from Kirklees and 1,084 moving from Calderdale.

Coming from other nations were 353 people; 167 from Scotland, 156 from Wales and 30 from Northern Ireland.

The other areas where the most people moved to Bradford from were Craven with 493 people coming to Bradford, followed by 407 coming from Manchester, 369 from Birmingham, 288 from Sheffield and 285 from Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Some of the areas whose residents didn’t fancy a change of scenery in Bradford were Chichester, the Wyre Forest and West Devon.

For people leaving the district, unsurprisingly Leeds, Kirklees and Calderdale were the most popular destinations, with 3,252 people heading to Leeds and more than 1,200 each heading to Kirklees and Calderdale.

Other northern areas also topped the list – 780 to Craven, 529 to Manchester, 434 to Wakefield and 431 to Sheffield. Leaving England altogether were 576 people, 375 to Scotland and 201 to Wales.

Of the 308 local authorities in England, people left Bradford for all but 12 areas, which included the Isles of Scilly, City of London and Mid Devon.

The number of people leaving and moving to Yorkshire was almost identical, with 118,082 people moving to the region and 118,110 leaving.

A possible sign of the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, which began in March 2020, is the figure for London, which saw net migration of more than -100,000 with 218,902 heading to the capital and 320,284 people leaving.

Almost 1.5 million people moved between local authorities in the year to June 2020, a fall of 157,602 people from the year before.
