A DRUGS driver from the Bradford district who police said reached 90mph in his BMW on Keighley Road, Skipton, has been banned from driving for 20 months.

Magistrates told Riazjul Rahim, 24, that they were increasing the length of the disqualification because he had been on bail at the time awaiting sentencing on another matter.

Skipton magistrates heard on Friday that police stopped Rahim at about 8.45pm on January 20 because the black BMW he was driving was ‘wheeling’ about the road, and reached 90mph in ‘poor weather’.

He tested positive for cannabis, was arrested and taken to the police station. A blood sample later revealed he had 6.6 microgrammes of cannabis by-product, Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol in 100 millilitres of blood. The specified limit is two.

Rahim, of Asthall Close, Keighley, and who admitted drugs driving, was sure he had not been doing 90mph at the time, and had pulled over once he had seen the police, the court heard in mitigation.

Keith Blackwell said Rahim lived with his mother and worked in supported living services in the Bradford area. In January, he had received a community order with 200 hours unpaid work for other matters.

Magistrates told Rahim they were leaving his existing order unchanged but were banning him from driving for the longer time of 20 months, to also take into account the high reading - three times the specified limit. He was also fined £120 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £34.
